I started Autumn late with my 1st show well into October - The 11th October, in fact. Progresja was host to brooding British acoustic troubadour, Fink and his multi-instrumentalist touring partner, the Kiwi, Finnegan Tui - and with a name like that, of course until I googled it, I thought the fella was Irish.
Having never heard of Fink until moving to Poland, despite working in the music industry in the UK for a decade, I had the impression that, though I'm sure he has a devoted following at home, similar to Archive, he's more popular and acclaimed on the continent. I was curious, and I had to start Autumn somewhere, so I figured some acoustic melancholy would be as good a place as any.
Before that, though, Finnegan Tui brought his antipodean charm and haunting melodies to the Polish public. Tui's music is delicate without being fragile, emotional without descending into mawkish cliches, and has an ethereal, haunting, folky ambience that was not unlike Patrick Wolf's more introspective moments. If Finnegan's not a fan of the South Londoner, I'd be very surprised.
Though I preferred his touring partner, Fink's music is no less atmospheric and cinematic. Rather than folk, though, he takes his more obvious cues from the blues. With a full band behind him (including the aforementioned Kiwi), the songs have the engine to be more dynamic. Though not short on ambience, Fink's is a grittier sound, a more rhythmic, raw experience on guitar. Drums are used sparingly often to crescendo as if to end a song with a crashing exclamation point.
In all, it's a good start to a busy few months of gig photography.
And Finally…
I’ll be back later in the month, a day before Halloween, with Photos, mostly - as I slowly get myself back on track with regularly scheduled posts for you.
I’d be very grateful if you would subscribe to or share Photos, mostly. Sharing with 1 or 2 friends who enjoy street photography really will help more than you may think. Especially as I get this project back on its feet ready for 2025.
If you’re a Substack writer and enjoy this publication, I’d be more than humbled if you would consider recommending Photos, mostly to your subscribers.
Photos, mostly is free to read, however, paid subscriptions and donations help me keep making photographs and writing. All labour required to publish Photos, mostly is undertaken by me alone. As I strive to better live by my anti-capitalist beliefs, I will donate 10% of all income to anti-capitalist, leftist or progressive causes or organisations.
Please consider upgrading to a paid subscription or buying me a roll of film. You can do so by clicking here, or by aiming your smartphone camera at the QR code below.
I'm partial to some of that Tri-X 400 if you're asking. Thank you!
Excellent writing and photography IMHO; the third shot full stage showered with several lights is epic.
