New subscriber. I recently bought the MAGNUM Contact Sheets book and what impressed me most was how few images from a roll were picked by each "iconic" photographer as being "good enough". I have been shooting film since the early 70s, bought my first digital camera in 2005, and came back to film in 2020 at the height of all the COVID restrictions and lockdowns when looking for something meaningful to do in photography. At my age I no longer care about selling my work but continue for the joy of doing it. Looking forward to your articles.
100% Steve. The Contact Sheets book was absolutely integral to my learning to better edit my photos. At the Kalvar masterclass, he showed us his contact sheets included in the book (and a couple of other more recent selections of digital work) and to follow through his process from spotting a scene to shooting through until perfecting the shot was illuminating. Thanks for commenting and I hope you enjoy what's coming up in the next few newsletters. :) Cheers.
Yeah, when I first started out, I was so naive thinking that every shot had to be gold. Now I'm much happier to know the gold will come in amongst the others. Most important thing though is self-criticism. Analysing the roll regardless and working out where I went wrong in the shots that don't measure up.
