Some Photos. Extended Edition. #1
Or: Lifting the needle from the record for a month
As I near the hallowed milestone of 1000 subscribers to Photos, mostly, I have become ever more conscious of the quality of the work I do here. For 15 months I've written an array of, I hope, entertaining articles on the subject of street photography, and my subscribers have been very kind in their feedback.
As I move into 2024, I have begun to teach private photography lessons, I am looking for more freelance work in both documentary and music photography, and I have fallen a little behind in school and must catch up. All of this comes at a time when my anxiety is up, I'm suffering from a concurrent dose of the old writer's block, and if I were to say Substack's recent troubles had not knocked my enthusiasm and drive, I suspect I would be lying. Given the number of I’m taking a brief pause, or, time for an unexpected slow-down posts I’m seeing, I’m not the only one.
All that is to say that despite having the newsletter's content for the year ahead meticulously sketched out, I have not had the time or the concentration to research and pen my article for this month. Instead, following on from some excellent Substack photo posts I have enjoyed over the last months, I opted to start developing the 30-odd rolls of Tri-x nestled inside my desk drawer and present an extended Some Photos section for this month. I hope you enjoy the selection of photographs, and the delayed Issue 15 will follow at the end of February.
Some Photos. Extended edition
Digest, January 2024
My latest article for Shoot It With Film made its long-awaited appearance. It took me almost a year to write this thing, but it’s out.
I am a fan of Marcel Borgstijn’s newsletter Darkrooms, so I was delighted to be asked to take part in his The Dark Rooms of… interview series.
And Finally…
Thank you to all my new subscribers. It’s great to have you here. Next week, on the 7th, there will be a little something for paid subscribers, before we resume our regular programming on the 14th of February with the next Dispatches email.
I’d be very grateful if you would subscribe to or share Photos, mostly. Sharing with 1 or 2 friends who enjoy street photography really will help more than you may think.
If you’re a Substack writer and enjoy this publication, I’d be more than humbled if you would consider recommending Photos, mostly to your subscribers.
Photos, mostly and Dispatches are free to read, and now each month there will be at least 1 article for paid subscribers. Please consider upgrading to a paid subscription or buying me a roll of film. You can do so by clicking here, or by aiming your smartphone camera at the QR code below.
I'm partial to some of that Tri-X 400 if you're asking. Thank you!
Excellent selection! The sharp angled perspectives of the first image and the image with the megaphone were so striking. I liked the juxtaposition of work and play with the snowman and the shoveling. The ice skaters were so softly nostalgic. And I did a double take on the truck with the old-fashioned carriage on its door, so unexpected! Congratulations on all your progress, and best wishes on your upcoming plans! :)
Well deserved break :) I’ve enjoyed your words and photos so much, and look forward to the return. You never know, perhaps we’ll get a round to sorting that collab (and email reply 😂).
