A Photographic Slide Towards Lost Hearing
Or: March '24 in Music Photography (and thank goodness for custom moulded earplugs)
A little late, aren't we? It's the 1st edition of Photos, mostly that has been published a day later than expected - not something I plan to make habitual. There was such a warm response to my recent Dispatches email, where I talked of my return to music photography, that I decided to show a selection of pictures from my 1st month back in the pit.
For subscribers that are here for street photography, that will return with great alacrity in the next issue. For today, however, I suggest you turn the volume up loud, click on any of the links to music below, and enjoy this short audio-visual tour through March.
3 songs, no flash
Oddly enough, the 1st show I photographed in March, I don’t have any photographs to show you. Dragonforce on March 4th was a few days before I travelled back to Scotland to pick up my new digital camera, so I shot this show on Tri-X and haven’t yet developed the film.
Blood and Bone
Next up was Blood and Bone, a charity festival run by Warsaw band, Backbone, and promoted by Deerhunter Booking. Psychodelic, stoner, doom, black metal and a lot of post-everything. Not all of it was my thing, but returning to gigs, it was something of a baptism of fire. A new camera, ISO as a flexible option, and a lot of moody darkness.

Traces to Nowhere
A week later, I was out again for a weekend of shows. The 1st for a band called Traces to Nowhere. I was due to stick around for both Substancja and headliner, Ciśnienie, however, I didn’t feel so well and my night ended early. A shame because I heard Ciśnienie were excellent.

Dopelord
The next night, feeling better, I took a trip over the water to Praga in the east of Warsaw, for Dopelord supported by Superelectric and Mentor.

Potence
For an indie and post-rock kid, that was probably enough stoner, doom, and metal for a while. Next was something more familiar… some punk and screamo in this co-headline tour featuring the Germans, Ocaso, and the French, Potence, who were supported by new wave duo, Magic Moments, and one of my favourite bands in Warsaw, We Watch Clouds.

And so the month comes to an end, and I still have 1 show before I move into the 8 shows in April - though I didn’t want to wait to publish something this month, so the Aussies, Yoo Doo Right will appear in the next music edition, alongside Godspeed, Widowspeak, Patrick Wolf, and Σtella, among others.
If you’ve enjoyed this brief digression away from street photography, let me know and I will bring more, occasional, music photography onto Photos, mostly in the future.
And Finally…
Paid readers, keep a look out for the next Cultural Filofax and everyone else, stay tuned for the next Dispatches coming on the 10th of April.
I’d be very grateful if you would subscribe to or share Photos, mostly. Sharing with 1 or 2 friends who enjoy street photography really will help more than you may think.
If you’re a Substack writer and enjoy this publication, I’d be more than humbled if you would consider recommending Photos, mostly to your subscribers.
Photos, mostly and Dispatches are free to read, however, paid subscriptions and donations help me keep making photographs and writing. All labour required to publish Photos, mostly is undertaken by me alone. As I strive to better live by my anti-capitalist beliefs, I will donate 10% of all income to anti-capitalist, leftist or progressive causes or organisations.
Please consider upgrading to a paid subscription or buying me a roll of film. You can do so by clicking here, or by aiming your smartphone camera at the QR code below.
I'm partial to some of that Tri-X 400 if you're asking. Thank you!
Killer photos!
Loved this! Great photos - they catch the whole stoner/psychedelic/doom aesthetic (which I am at times partial to) completely. Thanks.
